West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing John Obi Mikel, according to Sky Sports.

The 33-year-old midfielder left Turkish side Trabzonspor by mutual consent back in March and has been without a club since.

Mikel had a stint playing for Middlesbrough in the second-half of the 2018/2019 season in the Championship but left for Trabzonspor once his contract expired.

The Nigeria international plays predominantly as a defensive midfielder, but can also be used as a central and attacking midfielder if necessary.

If, heaven forbid, Albion stay in the Championship, Mikel could be a reasonably good signing for the Baggies; and given that it would be for free, there is little risk involved.

However, if the club are indeed promoted then the board should look elsewhere for younger, more promising talents, rather than veterans who some might regard as “over the hill”.

Another defensive midfielder would be useful to have, as only Harper, Sawyers and Livermore occupy the position right now, and when one of them is injured the squad suddenly appears very thin in that area.

It will be interesting to see what Slaven Bilic, along with sporting director Luke Dowling, have to say on the matter.
