West Bromwich Albion are among several clubs to have reached out to free agent Jeff Hendrick so far this summer, according to 90min.
Hendrick left Burnley in July after refusing to sign a new deal with the club, prompting interest from the likes of Newcastle, AC Milan, Southampton, Everton and, indeed, West Brom.
90min report that Newcastle are confident they are leading the race for the 28-year-old midfielder, with manager Steve Bruce expected to play a key part in luring the Ireland international to Tyneside this summer.
Hendrick is the type of player that Albion are after, with Bilic eager to bring in a box-to-box midfielder.
The fact that he’s a free agent will naturally be a big pull for the Albion board given how restrictive this season’s transfer budget is supposed to be.
Hendrick is valued at £8.10m by Transfermarkt; to be able to sign him for nothing in this window would be superb business by the club, but they must first fend off the huge competition which is a big ask.
