Today, the Chronicle confirmed that Dwight Gayle is still very much on West Bromwich Albion’s radar, with the 30-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Albion fans are naturally excited at the prospect of being reunited with Dwight Gayle after his incredible loan spell with the club back in the 2018/2019 season, where he scored 23 goals and provided eight assists in 39 Championship matches.

West Brom have been closely linked with Dwight Gayle since his departure from the Baggies at the end of his loan spell, but Newcastle appointing Steve Bruce as manager of the club put a halt to that interest, with the ex-Wigan boss keen on including the forward in his squad.

However, Gayle’s performances in the Premier League have been a far-cry from his time in the Championship with the Baggies; in 20 appearances for the Magpies last season, he scored just four goals.

It would be a superb coup for Albion if Luke Dowling and Xu “Ken” Ke secure Dwight Gayle as a free agent in the summer, but the most likely scenario is that Newcastle will offer him a contract extension to crush the fans’ hopes once again.

Gayle is valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt so it wouldn’t make much financial sense for Newcastle to allow his contract to expire when they could rake back some of the £10m they paid for him four years ago.

Fans must also bear in mind that if Gayle’s contract runs out in the summer, a lot of clubs of a similar level to Albion will be interested in signing him, as he would represent a bargain for what he’s capable of – particularly in the Championship.

Only time will tell if Dwight Gayle will make a triumphant return to the Hawthorns ahead of next season, but it’s safe to say that the fans would welcome the opportunity to see him back in the stripes.
