Embed from Getty ImagesA name familiar to Baggies fans who followed the club’s activity in the January transfer window, Oršić has impressed many with his performances for Dinamo Zagreb both in domestic and continental competitions.
It also seems as though West Brom’s long-standing interest has materialised into a reported £8.5 million bid this week, according to Croatian media outlet IndexHR.
With Albion’s transfer budget supposedly a lot smaller than many first expected, Oršić would certainly represent a cheaper option than other midfielders that have been seriously linked to The Hawthorns like Diangana and Eze, but what would Oršić offer Bilić’s side?
The right-footed left-winger has certainly shown an eye for goal this season — a trait that will be welcome considering Albion’s current lack of a reliable goalscorer up front.
The three-time Croatian international has scored 21 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions for Dinamo Zagreb this season, including four in six games in the Champions League.
Albion fans can expect a pacey, tricky winger who runs directly at the full-back and is comfortable heading to the byline to supply crosses, but like many inside-forwards Oršić prefers to cut inside on his right to engineer chances for teammates or take the shot on himself.
He’s not dissimilar in play style to Grosicki, who joined Albion in January as a cheaper alternative to Oršić.
Oršić is 27, five years younger than Grosicki, entering his prime and is coming off the back of a terrific season in Croatia.
This appears to be very smart business for the Baggies and whilst there are no guarantees with unproven Premier League talent, this has the hallmarks of another canny transfer by the Albion hierarchy since Bilić’s appointment a year or so ago.
